In January 2018, Silk Passage Business Consultancy organized a business trip to Serbia for Shanghai Tongji University delegation, one of the leading universities in China under direct administration of the Ministry of Education. The purpose of this trip was to sign agreement between Tongji University and University of Belgrade, the leading educational institution in Serbia and Eastern Europe region, acting in compliance with the Law on Higher Education (Official Gazette of the Republic of Serbia No. 88/2017), comprising of 31 Faculties and 11 Research and Scientific Institutes and other Academic Units。Tongji was represented for the purpose of signing of this Memorandum by Professor Li Fengting, Executive Deputy Dean of UN Environment-TONGJI Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development and Vice Dean of College of Environmental Science & Engineering while University of Belgrade was represented by Rector, Academician Vladimir Bumbasirevic.

Both Universities agree to be aware of and to recognize the Resolution 64/292 of the UN General Assembly in July 2010, which confirmed that the target focuses on the progressive realization of the right to water and sanitation through increasing the number of people with access, improving existing service levels and progressively eliminating inequalities in access to services reflecting the established principles of the human right to water and sanitation, as well as the capacity of climate change adaptation. Furthermore, both Universities recall that one of the targets of Post-2015 Agenda and UN Sustainable Development Goals was to emphasize improved access to affordable and safety water supply, especially for developing countries. Universal access to basic drinking water, sanitation and hygiene is an obligation of states, pursuant to the human right of water supply and sanitation, and essential element for eliminating extreme poverty and achieving “zero” targets in health, education and nutrition.

According to the signed agreement, Tongji and Belgrade University will enhance cooperation and establish research center on water supply and sewage treatment as well climate change adaptation and mitigation. Both Universities agree on sharing improved technological knowledge with more countries and allow more people to have access to safe and affordable water. Cooperation between the Universities will involve the following areas: project management, research collaboration, recognition of qualifications, staff development and exchange, student mobility and exchange but further areas for cooperation are opened as well.

This agreement represents an excellent platform for solving environmental issues with purpose to promote and enhance the ecological and environmental cooperation, environmental policy communications and increased understanding between people in Euro-Asia region under “One Belt One Road” initiative. Through this platform all stakeholders will work together to facilitate green innovation and serve for the economic transition and upgrading. The goal is to improve the environmental capacity of Euro-Asian countries, to connect high talents and to share new technologies.

Tongji delegation also had welcome and introduction meetings with relevant ministries of Republic of Serbia, where they are informed about existing projects and other cooperation possibilities. There was also an organized meeting with representatives of Bosnia and Herzegovina government and company SIRMIUM SH s.r.o from Prague, Czech Republic, that represent Alumni production company “Zvornik”from Bosnia. The topic of the meeting was to discuss about a project concerning the recycling of red mud, a highly alkaline waste product composed mainly of iron oxide, that is generated in the industrial production of alumina through Bayer process.  Discharge of red mud is hazardous environmentally because of its alkalinity. But beside iron oxide (Fe2O3) red mud contain more valuable metals such as Titanium dioxide (TiO2). Both side agree to start research and cooperation with aim to find best solution and methods for separation of those valuable materials and REEs (Rear Earth Elements) such as Lanthanum, Cerium, Neodymium and Yttrium from more than 22 million tons of bauxite residue.

Finally, in cooperation with Montenegro government, Tongji delegation visited the Bijelo Polje municipality in Montenegro and were introduced with opportunities for cooperation and cross-border environmental projects.

Tongji University delegation had an incredible trip filled with professionally organized and fruitful business meetings along with authentic Serbian cuisine, history, beautiful attractions, lively nightlife, outdoor adventures, and so many cool cultural experiences.
